ALVIN COHEN The Alvin Cohen Memorial Fund is the gift of a creative imagination, concerned for the quality of theatre for children and young people. Mr. Cohen served the theatrical field professionally and philanthropically. He was treasurer of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) during the mid-1970s, where he led USITT into firm financial ground.

He owned Paramount Theatrical Supplies on Times Square (later renamed Alcone) which became a national business. Mr. Cohen’s business specialized in an extensive inventory of theatrical makeup supplies.

He was a faithful friend of Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) and children’s theatre. He also served as a Trustee of the CTFA. The Alvin H. Cohen Memorial Fund is his gift to the Children’s Theatre Foundation of America to encourage the imaginative in production.

Mr. Cohen died, March 29, 2008. He is survived by his wife, Harriet Cohen, who lives in Tamarac, Florida and his daughter, Paula Cohen and son, David Cohen. The Cohen family gift, The Alvin Cohen Memorial Grant, continues in his memory.

Supporting Conference Programs of National Significance
Cohen grants are designed to encourage and support exceptional programs at national theatre conferences. The proposed program must feature mentor-artists: directors, playwrights, actors, choreographers, or designers of stage sets, lights or costumes, whose reputations will attract wide attendance and/or participation. Exhibits, demonstrations and/or workshops led by such professionals are also eligible.
Alvin Cohen Memorial Fund Grants
Cohen Grants are biennial in support of programming for:
• U.S. National Theatre Associations solely concerned with theatre for children and youth ages 4-18.
• The national theatre association must have been incorporated for a minimum of three years and have a verifiable record of accomplishments.
